Dedicated Servers Description

When we talk about hosting servers, there are 3 basic varieties - shared web hosting servers, VPS (virtual web servers) and dedicated servers. Shared hosting web servers accommodate multiple clients and so the resources per hosting account are limited, VPS accounts offer more server configuration autonomy, but also affect other virtual web servers on the hardware node if used imprudently, and dedicated servers offer you the chance to do everything you wish without interfering with anyone else.

Why would you require a dedicated server?

Dedicated servers are traditionally much more expensive than shared hosting web servers or virtual web servers. Why would anyone, then, want to use them? The explanation is rather simple. If your company has a data-heavy web portal, or just has very exact server setup requirements, the most sensible choice would be a dedicated server. For someone who is willing to invest in security and reliability, the higher price is not an issue. You are given root-level access and can utilize 100 percent of the dedicated web server's system resources without anyone else availing of these system resources and intervening with your websites.

Hardware specs

Most hosting distributors, including us at Host Birds, offer different hardware configurations you can select from in consonance with your demands. The configurations offer different varieties of microprocessors, a different number of cores, different RAM and server hard disk sizes and different monthly bandwidth allowances. You can choose a hosting CP, which is a useful software tool if you wish to use the dedicated hosting server for website hosting purposes solely and choose not to resort to a Secure Shell terminal for all the modifications you will be making. We provide three kinds of web hosting Control Panel software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The web hosting CP of your choosing

If you are a self-reliant Linux user (our servers are powered by Linux or other Unix-based Operating Systems), you could administer your dedicated server via SSH only. That, however, could be awkward, especially if you wish to grant complete root access to somebody else who has less technical abilities than yourself. That is why having web hosting Control Panel software pre-activated is a fine idea. The Hepsia hosting Control Panel GUI that we provide does not include full root-level access and is mostly suitable for someone who runs a lot of online portals that swallow plenty of system resources, but would rather administer the websites, databases and e-mail aliases via a user-friendly web hosting CP. The DirectAdmin and cPanel web hosting Control Panels, on the other hand, give you complete root-level access and have three levels of access - root, reseller and user. If you plan to resell hosting packages rather than using the server only for yourself, you should choose one of these two.

Web server monitoring and backup services

Last but not least, there is the issue of monitoring the dedicated server and of backing it up. In the event of a problem with your dedicated hosting server, such as a non-responsive Apache or a network downtime, it is desirable to have some kind of monitoring system enabled. Here at Host Birds the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you order a Managed Services upgrade, they monitor the individual services on the dedicated server too. Backups are also an extra feature - the hosting services provider offers you data backups on our own backup servers. You could select a type of RAID that would permit you to save the same data on 2 server hard disk drives as a precaution in the event of a server hard disk drive failure, or in case someone whom you have ranted complete server root access deletes something by accident.
